By the 1990s it had become obvious that there was no longer a need for all the extra deep water harbour space created by the Western Breakwater. In 2002, Forth Ports Authority applied for approval to reclaim land inside the breakwater, initially for commercial purposes. The original plans for the 19ha site went through a number of stages, and now include 2200 new homes, a primary school, a doctor’s surgery, shops, a promenade and a 4.4ha park — the largest new public park in Edinburgh for 100 years.
Work progresses through the various phases to advance these plans with the most important one for the community, the three-storey primary school which opened in 2022.
Together with the historic village, the area can now be truly called GREATER NEWHAVEN and a new chapter in its chronicle begins.
